The Christian Musician Who Feels Called To The World

[This post is part of a new series on "The Christian Musician". Check out the rest of the posts here.]

Have you ever felt that your music was made for those outside the church walls?

Does your heart break for those who would never set foot within a church and clap and sing to modern worship songs?

If so, how do we reach them?

You Are A Lousy Judge Of Your Potential

Did you know that only 1.7% of the population finishes projects?

It seems we have an incredible knack for starting things, yet a propensity to never see them through.

What is so difficult about finishing?

We never feel comfortable shipping our work – calling it complete. We are practicioners of procrastination.

Test yourself.

Remember the last time you shared what you were working on? What happened before you showed the world?

It probably sounded something like this:

  • “I wrote this in 5 minutes”
  • “This isn’t done yet, so…”
  • “This is only a rough draft”
  • “I’m not sure I really like this, but here we go”
  • “I really like the two words in the verse, but the chorus kinda sucks”

You try to lower everyone’s expectations before you share, in case they don’t like it. If they aren’t impressed, you’re off the hook.

Your Creativity Can Change The World

[This post is part of a new series on "The Christian Musician". Check out the rest of the posts here.]

I love creativity.

There’s something special about encountering someone’s raw, passionate art. It can change your life. It has the potential to influence the way you see your day, the world, and eternity.

At least that was the case for me.

Why Is Worship Such A Big Deal, Anyway?

Worship. It’s a big deal these days, isn’t it?

Just hearing the word conjures up images of an industry – records, resources, world tours, conferences, and more songs than you can imagine.

You probably have a worship T-shirt. I even think Hanes is releasing a new line of worship boxer/briefs. OK, too far.

But in the midst of all the noise, do we really remember what worship is all about?

7 Tips For Engaging Youth In Worship

From David: Today’s post is a guest post from my friend Rob Still. Rob is a veteran worship leader who has a lot of experience engaging the next generation. Today’s post is a relevant post for us all, whether old or young, helping us engage the next generation in worship. See you in the comments!

I’d like to offer some thoughts and ideas to David’s post, “How Do You Engage A Younger Generation In Worship?”

He said:

“Older worship leader, they don’t hate you. They just have a hard time with your music. … How does a 45-60 year old worship leader engage a 14 year old in worship? Is it even possible?”

Good question – When are you too old to lead worship?

What Is The Goal Of A Christian Musician?

[This is part of a new series on "The Christian Musician". Check out the rest of the posts here.]

Why does the word “Christian” conjure up images of poor music and watered down messages?

Why are some of the top “Christian” artists hesitant to be labeled in such a way?

It’s time we return to the heart. What does it mean to be a Christian musician? What is the goal of our music?

Thanks for stopping by. It’s about to get good.

3 Steps To Leading Effective Worship Without Music

Whether you are a worship leader, pastor, small group leader, board member, or elder in the church, it’s safe to say that you will be called upon to stand before a group of people and lead them in expressing worship to God.

You may or may not have a guitar around your neck or stand behind a keyboard, but effective worship leading doesn’t rely on those anyway.

What Does It Mean To Be A Christian Musician? (New Blog Series)

Have you ever been told that listening to or playing secular music is wrong?

Have you ever wondered what it means to be a Christian musician in the “marketplace”?

We know it’s OK to play Christian music, but what about the Christian who sings, gigs, and performs in the “world”? What are the differences between a musician who is a Christian and one who is not?

Should there be a difference or is it simply a job for both?

This is the tension we find ourselves in today.

Will you help me tackle this?
