Beyond Sunday: A Step By Step Guide To Creating And Sustaining A Vision For Your Worship Team

If you’re a worship leader, routine is the name of the game. You pick songs, you program services, you rehearse your band, you lead worship on Sunday. Rinse and repeat.

But how do we move beyond the routine and really make a difference? How do we move beyond Sunday?

I’m really excited to announce the release of my first e-book, Beyond Sunday: A Step-by-Step Guide To Creating and Sustaining A Vision for Your Worship Team.

About Beyond Sunday

This isn’t merely a book to read over a cup of coffee, though as the cover suggests, coffee is awesome. This is a guide with step-by-step instructions for creating and sustaining a vision. It’s a manual that you can start applying within your leadership today.

I’ve entitled it Beyond Sunday because the strength of worship leadership is what happens in between services and songlists. It’s about leading your team, catching a vision for the future, and making it happen.

Why is this important, you may ask? Three reasons:

1. You want to do more than simply manage volunteers. You want to raise up world changers.

2. You want to know what you’re working towards, and the peace of mind that comes when you do.

3. You’re not satisfied with just leading songs on Sunday. You want to set life change in motion.

“David has a heart for worship. Even greater he has a heart for the process of worship leadership. Let David help your church with this simple, but powerful process of effective worship planning.”
-Ron Edmondson
Pastor, Grace Community Church
Clarksville, TN

In this brief e-book, you will find a step-by-step guide and worksheet that will walk you through what it means to disciple your worship team. Topics such as:

  • Where to start when creating a vision
  • Connecting with the mission of your lead pastor
  • Developing an annual discipleship strategy
  • A personalized worksheet to help you craft and execute your vision

“I have known David since he was a very young man and I have watched him develop into a powerful musician, song-writer, and pastor/teacher. David is gifted both as a worship leader and as a teacher, which enables him to share his unique Biblical insights from a very relevant perspective, since he leads the worship team at Allison Park Church. I highly recommend his life and ministry to you.”
-Jeff Leake

David, you are a source of inspiration and growth for me. Thank you for being faithful to God’s call on your life and allowing yourself to be used in His service. We are currently at a place in our church, in it’s growth and expansion and this tool will be useful in helping plan my goals and vision and the communication with the rest of my team.

Very excited to get this book.. I’ve been following your blog for a while now and always enjoy your posts. I work with Youth with a Mission in Sweden and will soon be taking on the task of getting our worship on the base more organized and also pioneering the building of a recording studio here! Exciting times.

One question though. I signed up for the newsletter (Yay MailChimp! Love those guys), but I can’t seem to put my eyes on a download link… Thanks for the help in advance.

    • David Santistevan November 2, 2011 at 7:14 am #

Thanks for the kind words, Cameron. There should have been a download button in a secondary email, after you confirm your email address. Do you see that? Let me know if you’re still having issues.

      • Cameron Hunt November 2, 2011 at 7:54 am #

Are you talking about the confirmation email from MailChimp? I didn’t see a link there and I didn’t get any other emails after that one.

  7. Buffie November 2, 2011 at 10:09 am #

    Hi David,
I would like to thank you for your book. It came at a time when I really needed it. I have ministered in the same church for the past 33 years and have had the privilege of mentoring many younf and talented people.

I would love to hear you address this question. Being in the ministry for so long you come to know many things that you really wish you didn’t know about the people you work with. When you see younger people idolize those that, on the outside look great, but you know on the inside have been less than a stellar example. I do not break confidentiality but sometimes I see someone headed down a road that should not be followed. It is tearing me up and I feel so helpless watching this happen. I seriously think I need therapy because I have to harbor so many “secrets” because I do not want to talk bad about people.

I would love to know your thoughts,
    Buffie

    • Rob Still November 2, 2011 at 10:56 am #

Hey Buffie, I know how you feel. Been there, done that – more than once.

We should honor the people we serve in a healthy way. This applies to those we serve under as well as those who serve under our leadership.

From my experience, I would say talking with someone (like a therapist) experienced with the issues you’re dealing with can be helpful for your own sanity.

    • David Santistevan November 2, 2011 at 3:56 pm #

Buffie, like Rob said, there’s nothing wrong with therapy. But I would also not put too much pressure on yourself to micromanage your team. Or if you think someone on your team is living a lifestyle not in line with your values, it might be time to have them step down. Just a couple suggestions. Hope that helps!

  8. Rich Jones November 2, 2011 at 10:10 am #

This book was awesome, but I didn’t find the chapter in there about whether or not Rob Bell was right or not. I guess I’ll keep reading…

    • David Santistevan November 2, 2011 at 10:13 am #

I’m working on a follow-up ebook devoted exclusively to this topic. It’s 300 pages and it’s awesome.

  9. Rob Still November 2, 2011 at 10:42 am #

Hey David what a great book. I love how it’s clear, simple and easy to read quickly.

The timing is perfect, I was planning to write today on Worship Vision.

  10. Khamille Coelho November 2, 2011 at 11:03 am #

I can’t wait to read it and apply it. I have no doubt it’s going to change my life. You are awesome at what you do.

  11. Catherine Lalgie November 2, 2011 at 11:46 am #

I enjoyed readying your e-book, I have been asked to be the music and worship director for Grenada Baptist Association, in Grenada, this is make up of 5 churches and 2 missions. This book has really helped me understand a few things. Thanks David.

  12. Sean November 2, 2011 at 11:55 am #

Nice job, David. You’ve just provided me with a good tool and topic for my next creative arts meeting. I look forward to working through the “Create Your Plan” chapter. At the risk of sounding like a nitpicker, I noticed a typo on page 5, 5th para. (an extra “‘s”). OK, that did sound nitpicky. Sorry, dude.

    • David Santistevan November 2, 2011 at 12:24 pm #

Thanks Sean! And good eye, I’ve updated it for future downloads. You don’t know how many times I’ve read over this and it’s still possible to miss something :)

  13. Dave Helmuth (@adlib247) November 2, 2011 at 1:00 pm #

    Hey David,

I’m so encouraged to find a great wake up call for worship leaders to stop living “paycheck to paycheck,” and begin investing in their people so that they are actually stewarding (managing for increase) well!

I love the”Refresh” Night idea…sounds fun! And what a great statement of leadership…”what gets done through others.”

Thanks for making this helpful, actionable resource available!

    Dave

    • David Santistevan November 2, 2011 at 1:20 pm #

Thanks for the encouragement, Dave. Really appreciate you taking the time to read.

  14. Don McAllister November 2, 2011 at 1:43 pm #

    Thanks,

      • Sheelagh November 2, 2011 at 3:33 pm #

Hi. I’m glad I’m not the only one having difficulty getting your book – Wakenia is having the same problem. I have been told I am already subscribed, but I am unable to download….any further suggestions?

        • Wakenia Leonard November 2, 2011 at 3:40 pm #

  17. Caleb Delamont November 2, 2011 at 10:48 pm #

I just finished reading it. Thanks so much for putting this together, David. Some great reminders and challenges in there for myself and an easy thing to put in the hands of young worship leaders that I’m working with. Looking forward to more e-books from you.

        • Kathryn Hofer November 4, 2011 at 2:09 pm #

  21. Miranda Ochocki November 8, 2011 at 4:43 pm #

David, you know the saying about how timing is everything…well, your timing is perfect! As a worship leader, my husband and I are going through the exact same feelings and frustrations that you mentioned in the beginning. We’re going to take your worksheets and list our passions, develop a vision, etc. Thank you for working hard and putting this book out there. It’s nice to know we all struggle as leaders, and that we are not alone in those struggles!

  22. Danny Oficiar November 10, 2011 at 2:24 am #

I haven’t downloaded the book yet. I’ll give my comment when I read it.

    Hi David,

Thank you for allowing me to read your book for free, It has helped me to think, reflect and redirect myself. I hope that God may continue to use you in this ministry and enrich you with more ideas to help and guide us worship leaders in leading God’s people to His throne of glory. God bless you and your family.

    Regards,

  25. Trish November 20, 2011 at 7:40 pm #

    David,
What a thought-provoking and inspiring e-book! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
We are a brand new church – very small – with just 4 singers and one keyboard. Are there resources for those of us just starting out again (long story there), and feeling a bit short on the knowledge of how to build our group, worship God without totally burning out our lone instumentalist.
Any advice you could give would be so appreciated!

    Trish

  26. Armando Morales December 29, 2011 at 8:54 pm #

Thanks for taking the time to put this book together! It is challenging me to really think beyond what I felt I’ve been incapable of. I’ve fallen so short in keeping a vision at the forefront of our worship team that there’s been many times I’ve felt at a loss of direction for them. This resource has been simple, concise, and refreshing to read so I thank you once again. Keep up the great work!
