27 Habits Of Effective Worship Leaders

Worship leaders are more than song leaders.

They are more than entertainers who warm people up before a message. What do great worship leaders do? They:

1. Love Jesus

2. Spend time with Jesus

3. Study theology

4. Empower other musicians

5. Accept constructive criticism

6. Don’t take themselves too seriously

7. Hold their talents loosely

8. Always improve

9. Worship behind closed doors

10. Study other worship leaders

11. Constantly seek the “why” behind the “what”

12. Submit to their lead pastor’s vision

13. Work hard on planning and preparation

14. Communicate to their team often

15. Share vision to their team

    Can worship from the audience

often some worship leaders or musicians are great on stage…but when they sit out one…they just stand there in the crowd..maybe clap…or just goes outside…or goes to the sound guys…they do everything else but worship…

I’ve been feeling much more motivated, led, or ??? to be more interactive especially with other local worship leaders to encourage unity within the Church.

    They love their team members.

Yesterday, the Holy Spirit rebuked me about the way I was leading and treating my worship team, and He told me, “It’s not about YOU, as a worship leader, and about THEM (the singers and musicians in my team) (as two separate entities), it’s about all of you (leader and musicians and singers) working together in unity”. Indeed, until then, I had considered myself as above the musicians and singers, because I was their worship leader, and that I had been taken myself and my instabilities as a worship leader very seriously, however, I had forgotten the most important part, meditating on this word from the Holy Spirit, I realized that I did not have a relationship with my team members and I hardly knew them, and that made me feel ashamed. Indeed, I don’t ring them during the week to inquire how they are and I hardly pray for them. Also, until now, I had focused mainly on myself: What clothes will I wear on Sunday morning? Will I be confident enough? But the Holy Spirit taught me yesterday that a worship leader is a pastor, s/he CARES about his/her sheep, that is the people in his/her team.

Jesus said in John 10, “I know my sheep and they know me.” So, there is a relationship between Jesus, the good shepherd, and His sheep.

And “They know my voice and they follow me.” They follow Him because they know Him and they trust Him.

I realized that I could not work in unity with people whom I did not know, and also, that they could not trust me if they did not know me. Therefore, I have decided to build a relationship with my team members, to pray for them regularly and to share more about my life with them.

Yesterday, as I was meditating on the attitude I had had toward the members of my team, I learnt these lessons; that, even leading our team members, we must esteem them better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3), and that love is the bond of perfection (Colossians 3:14) which enables us to work in harmony with one another.

    May God bless you.

This is such a great challenge! Thanks for sharing. We need to care for our team members like a pastor cares for his flock. God is challenging me to care for their spiritual development just as much (if not more) than their musical development.
